Sports Academy

How does the Sports Academy Work?

Sports Academy participation is a year commitment and a specialist program where students apply, and limited numbers are offered, in each year group. Behaviour and attendance standards are set in place to maintain your place in the Academy. In 2021, the SCSC Sports Academy will be run as a progressive pathway for Year 5-9 students, with separate programs for each year group.
Sports Academy consists of five areas:

1) Athlete Development: One morning per week before school, the student’s complete an athlete development/strength and conditioning session. Our Athlete Development sessions have a different focus for each year group and are geared to the individuals needs
2) Specialist Sports Coaching: One morning per week before school, for the students who are selected for the sports of Basketball, Netball, AFL and Soccer
3) Athlete Education Days: Consists of one day each term, where the students will be involved
in workshops at school with the SSA staff, or attend an excursion.
4) Sports Academy Camp: Occurs in December and in 2021, we are preparing for the Year 7/8
students to head to the Gold Coast Performance Centre and the Year 9 students to the Sports
Hub Sunshine Coast (all camps COVID restrictions pending)
5) Parent Workshops: Sports Academy parents are offered four workshops (one per term) each
year in areas such as balancing school and sport, common injury concerns for youth athletes,
wellbeing, and sports nutrition.

Can I still be involved if my sport is not listed above?

If your sport is not one of the ones we do in Sports Academy, you can still be involved as an ‘Individual’ athlete. This means you do one athlete development session per week and are eligible for fitness testings, athlete education days and the Term 4 Camp. In 2019, we had Tennis, Running and Surfing athletes take up this option.
