STRIVE Program at SCSC
The Strive: Select Entry Enrichment and Extension Learning Program (SEEELP) at Surf Coast Secondary College offers academically gifted Year 7 students a tailored, research-based experience that nurtures individual strengths. Each student is paired with a dedicated mentor who helps set goals and supports personal growth. Students collaborate weekly with like-minded peers and access enriching opportunities like writing workshops, coding challenges, and Model UN via the Department of Education’s Arc platform. Through competitions, excursions, and creative projects, the program fosters curiosity, confidence, and academic excellence in a dynamic and supportive environment.
The Strive program is underpinned by the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model 2.0 – Adjusting the learning for extension, challenge and enrichment documentation, where the use of graphic organisers, Socratic Seminars, Rube Goldberg Machines and other skills are explicitly taught to foster curiosity and encourage deeper thinking.
Part of the application process involves students completing PAT tests on site at Surf Coast Secondary College (further details provided upon application), as well as submitting a short letter introducing themselves, their interests, strengths and what is important to them. We also ask them to explain why they would like a place in the Strive program and what they would like the program to include that would help support their learning. We understand that students are all unique and we value them as individuals. We hope this letter helps us get to know them personally and inform us of whether the Strive program will be the right fit to support their academic growth.

Evidence – Supported Excellence
At the heart of this program lies a commitment to evidence-supported learning. Drawing from established educational practices and research that clearly state that the streaming of students based on ability has a negative impact on their learning, this program is embedded into the year 7 program for the selected students. This program celebrates the individuals strengths of our SEEELP students, whether that be literacy or numeracy and doesn’t accelerate them in all areas, like many other programs do.
Your Dedicated Mentor
A crucial aspect of the program is the assignment of dedicated mentors to each student. These mentors serve as guides, setting goals, and assisting in the identification and nurturing of individual strengths. The presence of such a personalized support system can significantly contribute to a student’s overall success, both academically and personally.
Collaboration and Learning
One of the program’s standout features is the opportunity for students to collaborate with like-minded peers. They meet together weekly, sharing a classroom with others who share their passion for learning can be a catalyst for intellectual growth. It encourages the exchange of ideas, challenges, and motivates students to push their boundaries, all within a supportive and encouraging environment.

Students can partake in special programs, engage in competitive events, and embark on educational excursions and incursions, with other SEEELP students based on their strengths and passions.
